With 18,146 college hockey fans in
attendance, the Michigan and Michigan State hockey teams gave it
their all on the ice at Joe Louis Arena Saturday night. In a game
of ups and downs for each team, Michigan pulled off the 5-4
victory, scoring with 2:08 remaining in the third period and then
thwarted State's late 6 on 5 attempts to tie the game.
In a game that had two short-handed goals and one power play
goal, Michigan took an early 3-0 lead through the first period only
for Michigan State to fight back and score 4 unanswered goals (2 in
the second and 2 in the third) to take the lead with 6:51 left in
the third period. Michigan then scored with 4:48 left to tie the
game. The Three-Stars of the game were Michigan's Chris Brown
(First Star with the game-winning goal and an assist), Michigan's
Matt Rust (Second Star with a short-handed game to tie the game
late in the third and an assist), and Michigan State's Jeff Petry
(Third Star with one goal and an assist). Michigan moves to 15-12-1
(10-9-1 CCHA) on the season and Michigan State moves to 17-9-4
(12-6-4 CCHA) on the season.
College Hockey action returns to "the Joe" with the CCHA
Championship semi-finals and finals on March 19 and 20th.
