MICHIGAN CLAIMS CCHA CHAMPIONSHIP: Wolverines Defeat RedHawks 2-1 and N orthern Michigan Beats Notre Dame For Third Place
Detroit… The No. 1 Michigan Wolverines defeated No. 3 Miami RedHawks 2-1 to win the 2008 Mason Cup and CCHA Championship tonight at Joe Louis Arena.
Never trailing in the game, Michigan captured its eighth CCHA title in program history its first Mason Cup since 2005. The Wolverines garnered both the regular-season and postseason championships for the sixth time.
In the Third Place game played this afternoon, the Northern Michigan Wildcats defeated the Notre Dame Fighting Irish 2-1.
Honored with CCHA Championship All-Tournament team recognition were forwards Ryan Jones (Miami), Tim Miller (Michigan) and Matt Siddall (Northern Michigan). Honors also went to defensemen Alec Martinez (Miami) and Mark Mitera (Michigan) and goaltender Jeff Zatkoff (Miami). Miller also earned All-Tournament MVP honors with his 2-2-4 line in the two-game span.

Mike Cammalleri was off the IR for
barely two weeks before he went on a
tear, posting six points in two games.
On Thursday when hosting St Louis,
the former Wolverine recorded his fi rst
three-assist game since February, 2007.
On all three of his assists Alexander
Frolov was the goal scorer and Patrick
O’Sullivan notched the other helper.
The Kings went on to win 5-1. Saturday
night saw the Kings host the Chicago
Blackhawks. The Richomnd Hill, Ont.,
native tallied a goal and two assists in a
four-goal third period as the Kings came
storming back to tie in regulation. The
Hawks went on to win in OT, 6-5. In 109
career games at Michigan, Cammalleri
scored 65 goals and 130 points, leading
the Wolverines to a pair of CCHA regularseason
championships, a playoff title and
two Frozen Four appearances. During his
sophomore and junior seasons he was
elected to both the All-Conference and
All-American teams. In his junior year,
Michigan won both the regular-season
and playoff titles, and Cammalleri was
a member of the All-Tournament team.
The forward made his professional debut
in 2002 with the Manchester Monarchs,
and split time between them and the LA
Kings that season. Since then, he has
scored 197 points in 265 NHL games.
In 2004-05 he won the Willie Marshall
Award for scoring the most goals in the
AHL season with 46. Cammalleri was
selected by Los Angeles in the second
round of the 2001 draft.
